Quidnuncs 2007 Newsletter

Introduction
Welcome to the annual newsletter, for once sent out before our AGM, but only just, it is being held next Tuesday! Apologies.

Please note some key events for the coming season detailed below including the 1 day VM on a Saturday at Lords (there is likely to be a Quidnunc box), the 4 day VM at Fenner’s (including an informal Quidnunc marquee on the first day), an inaugural over 45s game v the Harlequins (their over 45s side!) on May 20th and the golf day (now on July 11th, not in August as usual).

We continue to update our address database and if you have a new address (postal but particularly email) or know of a ‘Nunc who has please pass it on. We are especially keen to get back in contact with many from 1970-1985, who seem to have dropped off the radar.

2007 Events

2007 AGM – 10th April 2007
This year’s AGM will place in the Tavern Stand Boxes E &F at Lord's cricket ground at 1830 on the above date. Imraan Mohammed will stand down from the committee and anyone who would like to join the committee should please contact the Secretary (email in footer) before the AGM. A representative from the 1965-1980 era would be ideal. At present the committee consists of the following.

Tony Lewis (President), Mike Barford (Treasurer), Garri Jones (Secretary), Imraan Mohammed, Stuart Block, Vikram Kumar, Rory Jenkins, David Littlewoood, Ian Massey (captain CUCC), Ben Jacklin (Hon. Sec CUCC)

The club’s Vice Presidents are: Ted Dexter, Hubert Doggart, David Haywood, Peter Howland, Michael Melluish, Peter Mills and Dennis Silk.

Quidnunc Marquee on day 1 of 4 day VM, Saturday June 30, Fenner’s Michael Bushby has arranged for CUCC to pitch a small marquee for the first day of the 4 day VM at Fenner’s on June 30th. Michael has arranged for some ‘Nuncs and Harlequins from his years (mid 1950s) to join and would welcome any other Quidnuncs or their guests. Lunch and Tea will cost around £25 and one can bring your own wine. If interested, please call Michael on 0173 235 2471

Quidnunc Box at one day VM, Saturday July 7th. Lord’s
Given that the one day VM is on a Saturday this year, it is highly likely that the Quidnuncs will take a box. Please contact the Secretary (email in footer) if you would like to come and watch some or all of the game, so we can make sure we have enough cold beer in the fridge. The cost will be about £15 a head.

The 16th Quidnunc Golf day - Worplesdon Wednesday July 11 2007.
With the days and your back swing starting to lengthen, it is now an especially good time to get this date in your diary. Please contact the secretary (email in footer) if you would like to play in this year’s golf day. The day will cost around £75 for two rounds of golf, bacon sandwiches in the morning, a long lunch and sandwiches at the close. Current student members will pay £50. The day is a month earlier this year, and is the Wednesday after the Lord’s VM. We hope that current student ‘Nuncs can join us

2006 Results

QCC v Harlequins CC, May 14th @ Arundel Castle, Match drawn

Vikram Kumar reports…”After two successive (and easy) victories under the new management team of Mohammed-House-Kumar, the 2006 Nuncs-Harlequins fixture was a bit disappointing for the men in Blue and yellow. A subtle but significant shift of the fixture to a week later than normal robbed us of a lot of club regulars who had to play in the National knockout and left the normally oversubscribed Nuncs side fielding 3 'ringers'.

After losing the toss the Nuncs took to the field a captain light, after Mohammed had 'taken a wrong turn' off the A23. In true Bollywood style, the captain was later to take a very good catch at second slip within seconds of arriving at the ground. The Harlequins took advantage of a mediocre fielding and bowling effort to post a good total of 250 in a little over 50 overs.

In response, the Nuncs got off to a good start thanks to Messrs Mohammed and McCartney, and when House joined Mohammed the Nuncs were the clear favourites. A middle order collapse of 1990s-England proportions, an overly long tailend and an unhelpfully trigger - happy umpire soon meant that a draw was the best we could hope for. This was secured with 9 wickets down thanks to a fighting 16 no from Joel Cliffe, and a notable contribution from Ed How who drew on the memories of his colossal 7 first class runs to hold out the last over from the ‘Quins fast bowler. A disappointing results but needless to say a wonderful day at Arundel once again.”

QCC v CUCC, June 25th @ Fenner’s, QCC lost by 8 wkts.

Richard Mann reports…
“The annual match against the young upstarts was a highly entertaining affair. A broken thumb for the skipper the night before the match relegated him to scoring duties, a duty, it has to be said, that was too much for him and he had to be relieved of the task in between innings.

Stand-in captain Duncan Heath won the toss and elected to bat, yet even with a promising start from the openers, the University had the has-beens struggling at 70 - 5. Some fine hitting by John Carroll took his mind off the terrible bout of food poisoning that he had been struck down with and took the Nuncs up to a respectable 183-8 from their 50 overs.

With only a week to go before the Varsity matches and hunger and confidence in the university team at a high, the ‘Nuncs could not pin-back the aggressive stroke play of the University's top-order. Two early wickets from Adam Clarke and Lynden Spencer-Allen offered a glimpse of the impossible, but an impressive partnership between Ian Massey and Grant Celliers, who both scored unbeaten half-centuries, ensured that the University galloped to victory with plenty of overs to spare and left the ‘Nuncs with their tails between their legs.”

QCC v Free Foresters, July 31@ City of Freemen’s School, QCC won by 3 wkts.

John Carroll reports….. “A Quidnunc team with an ideal mix of youth and experience produced a fine performance to outwit a talented FF side led by the renegade Russell Cake. Graham Charlesworth produced a worthy all round effort and Rory Jenkins, having forcefully stated his case to bat at four (rather high, perhaps?), composed a math-winning fifty. Despite a last over finish, the result was never in doubt!

Many thanks to all who played; the Heywood family deserves particular mention for providing two players and a wonderful venue in the City of London Freemen's School. Thank you, David.”

The 15th Quidnunc Golf Day – Worplesdon Friday 18th August 2006

18 ‘Nuncs played on a day that for once was not blessed with perfect weather. The Kenny Cup was, for the second time, won by the Hon Treasurer, Mike Barford esq. No one can remember who came second or who won the Quidsomes in the afternoon. There is an explanation: half the playing party retired to Lord’s for a dinner that evening and can not remember the golf, never mind the scores.

Quidnunc Membership List

A substantial effort has been made to update the Quidnunc Membership List (there are approximately 360 living Quidnuncs). The committee is particularly keen to ensure it has the correct addresses (postal and/or email) of all Quidnuncs. If at any time you change your address details please let the secretary know (contact details at the foot of this page). If you have received this newsletter by post and have an email address, then please email the secretary. Email saves the club money. Below is a list of all Quidnuncs for whom we do not have a correct email address (listed in date order, left to right). If you know their email, please contact the Secretary.

2007 Varsity Matches
The One Day match will be played at Lord’s on July 8sth and the four-day match will be played at Fenner’s from June 30th – July 3rd. The Ladies’ Varsity Match is taking place on the Nursery Ground at Lord’s at the same time as the one day Varsity Match.

CUCC Kit etc
CUCC caps, ties and cufflinks are on sale. Please see the CUCC website for detail.

CUCC Fundraising and Sponsorship
CUCC are urgently looking for sponsorship to provide the additional revenue required to support the ever-increasing cost of CUCC, CUWCC, Crusaders and UCCE activities. Our expenditure currently exceeds our income by some £35,000 per annum and this cannot be sustained. We can offer sponsorship packaged to meet a range of budgets for recruitment or marketing. These include:

Club sponsorship
Kit sponsorship
Travel sponsorship
Accommodation sponsorship
Match sponsorship
Ball sponsorship
Event sponsorship
Corporate membership

We are also looking to raise funds through expanding the membership. To this end, we are improving members’ facilities at Fenner’s and arranging more events to bring the membership together.

Finally, CUCC initiated a Gift Aid donation scheme last year to which a number of members responded with great generosity. They are, therefore, continuing these arrangements and hope that many more of you will support the club in this way. Gift Aid forms can be obtained from Anthony Hyde (01223 392663).
