Introduction
Welcome to the annual newsletter. This year we welcome a new President in Mike Griffith, who is taking over from Tony Lewis at this year’s AGM. Tony served for the full five years with much dedication for which the Committee and, I am sure, all ‘Nuncs are most grateful. Mike is a member of the CUCC committee and the current Chairman of the MCC cricket committee. He is ideally placed to help the Quidnuncs integrate as closely as possible with CUCC as well as help the MCC with their continued support of University Cricket. Mike and the whole of the Quidnunc committee are very keen to help Cambridge University cricket set its future course in changing times.
Please note some key events for the coming season detailed below including the 1 day Varsity Match at Lord’s, the 4 day VM and the inaugural 20:20 VM (both at The Parks) the ‘Nunc over 45s game, standard ‘Nunc cricket games and the golf day. We continue to update our address database and if you have a new address (postal but particularly email) or know of a ‘Nunc who has, please pass it on.
2008 Events 2008 AGM – 12th March 2008

QCC v Harlequins CC, May 13th at Arundel Castle, Match Abandoned
Both teams traveled to the game, but not one ball was bowled. However both teams lunched well and the match sponsor of many years, Ken Green, was presented with Blues and Harlequins caps and a small tankard as a way of thanks from both clubs for his marvelous support of this fixture.
QCC over 45s v Harlequins CC over 45s, May 20th at Dulwich College, QCC >45s won by 6 wickets
David Littlewood reports.
With the ever-youthful David Haywood rallying to my call, and David Macvicar making himself available six days after knee surgery, we were able to field the first Over 45s side (not an eleven because the Quins themselves only had ten) in Quidnunc history The sun shone, old friends met over a buffet lunch (except for Doc who arrived, as usual, after the first few overs) and the ground at Dulwich College looked an absolute picture. Wise old cricketing heads decided on a 30-over match and the Quins elected to bat first.
The Nuncs' opening attack was a triumph for modern knee surgery. Greigy with a knee pumped full of silicon, and Macvicar with the scars not yet fully healed, kept the Quins opening pair (Fincham and Kinkead-Weekes) to 4 an over. Our change bowlers Dewes and Parker then took the pace off the ball, only for the batsmen to put it back on again. However, they only went for 6 an over before we turned to our "death bowlers": Greigy (who bowled at the stumps ) and Holliday (who bowled where they couldn't reach it). In their allotted 30 overs the Quins had made 166 for 8. The total would have been significantly higher had it not been for some excellent Nuncs fielding - Howat leading the way with some athletic diving stops and a direct-hit run out. Is there a precedent for a Quidnunc being a better fielder at 50 than he was at 20?
Simpkin and Cottrell opened up for the Nuncs, scoring at 5 an over before both departed with the score on 25. Littlewood tried to give the strike to Parker, and then made a match winning move by getting out (with the score on 74 after 13 overs). This allowed Greigy to join Parker at the wicket, and while the Quidnuncs travelling supporters calculated the required rate, our Test pair made these calculations academic by hitting the ball around the park and seeing us home with 5 overs to spare (Parker 87 n.o. Greigy 37 n.o.)
So the Quidnuncs won by 7 wickets, and therefore instead of referring to the game as a friendly it will now be called the first Over 45s Varsity Match.
On behalf of the Quidnuncs, I have thanked Bryan Hamblin and Simon Northcote-Green for instigating the fixture and making all the arrangements at Dulwich. The general feeling in both camps was that we ought to do it again next year with a view to making it an annual event.
Best wishes to you all.
QCC v CUCC, June 10th at Fenner’s, QCC lost by 8 wkts.
Anush Newman reports
A youthful 'Nuncs side lost the toss and were asked to bat on an overcast morning, with an uncharacteristically green pitch awaiting us. The Blues bowling caused problems with accuracy and movement, and wickets were lost at regular intervals. Of the top order only Ian Bartholomew showed the necessary application to overcome the conditions to reach a gritty 50 before being bowled by left-arm spinner Baker. Run scoring had been difficult throughout due to the Blues excellent fielding until Savill and James broke the shackles in the last 10 overs where 65 runs were scored.
After lunch, the sun shone and the pitch flattened out considerably. However, the ‘Nunc's opening attack of Savill and Clarke bowled outstanding spells with Savill in particular unfortunate to finish wicket less after 5 overs. Clarke went on to bowl 10 overs off the reel conceding only 32 runs. The turning point in the match was undoubtedly when Birks outstandingly caught Massey behind the stumps off Savill, only for the call of no-ball to ring around the ground. Massey had made 8 at the time and went on to make a match-winning 76. The Blues were always in control and not even 2 wickets in 2 balls from the returning Savill could alter the course of the game. The Blues eventually cruised home with 8 overs and 7 wickets in hand.
Overall, a disappointing day for the 'Nuncs, but a good day was had by all, especially as the weather held out and Fenner’s was looking in great condition during the afternoon sunshine. Thanks to all those who played, roll on 2008...
QCC v Free Foresters, July 29 at City of Freemen’s School, Match Abandoned.
Neither team even traveled as the ground was swamped with overnight rain. This was a real shame as it was Quindunc Vice - President David Haywood’s last term as Headmaster and we looked forward to thanking him for his outstanding hospitality over the last couple of years.
The 16th Quidnunc Golf DayWorplesdon Wednesday July 10th 2007
18 ‘Nuncs played on a new date in July. We had moved the date forward a month in order to encourage some student members to play before they started holidaying in earnest. We were delighted to be joined by James Heywood and Robin Kemp who acquitted themselves commendably. Ian Simpkin won the Kenny Cup in the morning and, after an excellent lunch, Richard Bate and David 'Doc' Holiday won the afternoon Quidsomes.
Quidnunc Membership List
A substantial effort has been made to update the Quidnunc Membership List (there are approximately 360 living Quidnuncs). The committee is particularly keen to ensure it has the correct addresses (postal and/or email) of all Quidnuncs. If at any time you change your address details please let the Secretary know (contact details at the foot of this page). If you have received this newsletter by post and have an email address, then please email the secretary. Email saves the club money. Below is a list of all Quidnuncs for whom we do not have a correct email address (listed in no particular order thanks to copy and paste). If you know their email, please contact the Secretary.

2008 Varsity Matches
The One Day match will be played at Lord’s on June 17sth and the four-day match will be played at the Parks from July 1st - July 4th. The Ladies’ Varsity Match is taking place on the Nursery Ground at Lord’s at the same time as the one day Varsity Match.
CUCC Kit etc
CUCC caps, ties and cufflinks are on sale. Please see the CUCC website for detail.
CUCC Fundraising and Sponsorship
CUCC are urgently looking for sponsorship to provide the additional revenue required to support the ever-increasing cost of CUCC, CUWCC, Crusaders and UCCE activities. We can offer sponsorship packaged to meet a range of budgets for recruitment or marketing.
We are also looking to raise funds through expanding the membership. To this end, we are improving members’ facilities at Fenner’s and arranging more events to bring the membership together.
Finally, CUCC initiated a Gift Aid donation scheme last year to which a number of members responded with great generosity. They are, therefore, continuing these arrangements and hope that many more of you will support the club in this way. Gift Aid forms can be obtained from Anthony Hyde (e: hyde.anthony(replace with at symbol)ntlworld.com).
